Golf In Belize

Golf In Belize

There is only one golf course in Belize, and it is located in Roaring Springs, just outside of Belmopan. Belmopan is the capital of Belize. Currently, it has 9-holes around a tropical trees and flowers. There is a driving range and plans to add an additional nine.

But it may not be like any course you’ve played. There is sometimes a crocodile hanging out on the greens. While many golfers were proper golf attire, most don’t, and some don’t bother with a shirt.  They may be trying to make it a bit more proper. In the dry season, your ball may fall into a large crack. In wet season, many choose to play in rubber boots because of the fire ants floating around. Golf carts used to not be allowed, but now they are common. Mostly, it’s just a bunch of people that like golf and don’t take themselves too seriously.

There are several cabanas on the property that are overlooking the river and if one stays overnight, the golf is free. One can meander down to the river, wade through the water, and enter the cave. It’s refreshingly cold, invigorating, and a great way to cool off after a hot day golfing.

The club house restaurant has typical golf snack and food, such as hamburgers and chicken sandwiches. There is a special of the day, that is on the heavier side, but delicious. Chicken parmesan, chicken alfredo, and steak and mash potatoes are some of the popular specials. Breakfast is good as well, with fry jacks, omelets, and breakfast burritos. The coffee is instant that they mix up but on the Western Highway, before turning into the long gravel road to the golf course is WestStar Restaurant, that has an imported espresso machine.  They serve Belizean breakfast or a traditional American breakfast. For supper, they had a large menu, including menu items such as arrachera steak, ceviche, shrimp linguini, and worth going to if you are staying at the golf course and want to have supper out.

Green fees are nominal and there are monthly tournaments. Perhaps one of the most interesting tournaments is the Americans vs. the rest of the world, where the Americans play against Belizeans, British, Germany, and all other countries in attendance.

There are mini golf courses located in Hopkins and Placencia, which are both on the southern coast.
