Belize used to be British Honduras, meaning that it is more of a tea country than coffee. To most Belizeans, “Coffee” means instant coffee. Therefore, when dining, if you would prefer ground coffee, you should ask for ground coffee, not just instant. Many local restaurants only serve instant. Sometimes, they will bring it out so you can mix your own, while other times they will mix it for you. Most tourists are in disbelief as they were under the impression they were waiting for coffee to brew.

Unlike other Central American countries, Belize’s climate is not ideal for growing coffee trees. However, there are some small batch coffee makers, like Gallon Jug, but it’s unusual to find it reliably in the grocery stores. In Hopkins, Hopkins Market carries Che’il Coffee, a product that came out in 2023.
