Ambergris and Caulker are the most known cayes to tourists, but Belize has hundreds of little tiny islands and some other popular ones are in the southern part of the country. Islands are called cayes in Belize and pronounced key.
“Belize has the most remarkable reef in the West Indies,” declared Charles Darwin-- and we agree! Typically, the second week in May kicks off Reef Week in Belize. With Belize’s Great Barrier Reef stretching 190 miles long from Mexico to Honduras, it is a part of the Mesoamerican Reef system and the second largest in the world. (Australia’s reef is first.)
Remember, there are no chain fast food restaurants in Belize. However, some of these road side stands that sell many items are called “fast food,” meaning they serve “grab and go” food and snacks for a few dollars, and do not have restrooms.
